Lookout Software acquires Web 2.0 pioneer RSSCalendar

Lookout Software, LLC., a developer of Microsoft Outlook calendar sharing application for users without Exchange Server, OfficeCalendar; and a new AJAX time tracking solution for SME’s, Office Timesheets; announced today that it has acquired RSSCalendar, an innovative online event and calendaring syndication solution. The acquisition is intended to strengthen the company’s product portfolio by leveraging its knowledge of business-to-business group and shared calendaring, and Microsoft Outlook add-in development expertise.

I always liked RSScalendar because it added functionality to a RSS feed and made it more then just a one way communication channel. You could actually do something in your RSS feed (eg respond, add to calendar etc). I hope Lookout Software takes it to the next level. John: congratulations.

With the Mac OS X Leopard release iCal is getting 12 new features/upgrades. Most of them are aimed at business users. With more free/busy options, office hours, CalDAV Group Scheduling and reserve rooms iCal is moving towards an app more suited for office environments. Nice improvements but for the average user the improved interface with an event dropbox are the main enhancements. Read about all the new features on the Mac OS X website.

MS Entourage to upgrade to Entourage 2008

Entourage, the MS office calendar for the Mac, is about to be upgraded to Entourage 2008. According to Mac Mojo Entourage 2008 has improved the following:

  • Accept, Tentative, and Decline from the Calendar
  • Meeting updates and cancellations
  • Reply, Reply-all, and Forward
  • Stale Invites
  • Conflict and Adjacent Banners
  • No response requested
  • Better Exchange 2007 interaction

In my opinion all changes are not revolutionary and are need-to-haves for serious calendar app’s. MS is trying to help out a group of users (Mac users) which they have neglected for years. I don’t believe there are many Mac users who need a robust calendar tool that haven’t been disappointed by the past Entourage development and haven’t switched to eg iCal or Google Calendar. All in all necessary changes with nothing new.
